Is dual enrollment really free?

Yes. Florida law says public-school students who take dual-enrollment courses pay no tuition and no fees, and the district provides the textbooks at no cost. That's the rule in Fla. Stat. 1007.271. Who qualifies

The statute sets a minimum unweighted GPA and a placement-test score. As stated there: 3.0 GPA for college-credit courses, 2.0 GPA for career-certificate courses, plus a qualifying score on the PERT, SAT, ACT or CLT. The high school and the college both have to approve. Confirm the current figures with the counselor — rules can change.

What it's worth

Each 3-credit dual-enrollment course is worth the college's published tuition, fees and book cost for those credits — check the college's own rate page for the actual figures. A student who earns 15–30 credits in high school this way may shorten a college degree by a semester or a year. There is no fixed dollar amount here; it depends on the college.

AP, IB, AICE and industry certifications

Florida's statewide credit-by-exam policy guarantees college credit at public institutions for AP, IB, AICE and CLEP scores that meet the levels the state publishes. Students with financial need can get reduced AP exam fees. CAPE industry certifications on the state's funding list can also earn articulated college credit — useful for a trade goal.

What to know before saying yes

A dual-enrollment grade is a real college grade. It goes on the high-school transcript AND a permanent college transcript — a D or F stays there. Some universities and competitive programs, including nursing, look at this GPA and specific prerequisites. Getting to a campus course is usually the family's responsibility unless it's taught at the high school or online.
