Which grants can a small org actually win?

Free — takes 40 seconds

Your organization, in a few lines.

Mission, who you serve, annual budget, county, whether you have 501(c)(3) status (or a fiscal sponsor), and what the money is for — a program, staff, a building, general operating.

Free. Takes a few seconds.

Why this exists

Small organizations lose on eligibility, not on writing.

A missing registration, a budget below the funder's floor, a federal portal that was never realistic. The hours go into a proposal that could not win. This tells you which doors are open to an organization your size, and what to have in hand before you knock.

How it works

Forty seconds. Then a realistic list.

01

Describe the organization

Mission, size, county, what the money is for. Nothing is saved.

02

See what fits

Funder types that fund orgs your size, the eligibility walls, the packet — in English or Spanish.

03

Apply with the core written

The Letter of Inquiry, statements, budget skeleton and 90-day calendar, in the full version.

Plans

Finding grants is free. The application core is $29 a month.

The free version tells you where organizations your size get funded and what to gather. The monthly plan writes the Letter of Inquiry, the statements and the budget skeleton, and keeps your 90-day grant calendar — cancel after the first proposal if you like.

Common questions

How does Grant Finder decide which funders fit my nonprofit?

You describe your mission, budget, county, and what the money is for, and in seconds you get the funder types that fit an organization your size, the eligibility walls to check first, the documents to gather, and where to search — sources like the Candid Foundation Directory, Grants.gov, and your county's Children's Services Council or state agency. It never invents a funder name, deadline, or award amount; it only points you to where to verify each one. This is general guidance, not legal or tax advice — confirm every funder and deadline on the funder's own site or in Candid before you apply.

Our budget is under $250,000 — can we still get federal grants?

Rarely, and the tool says so plainly: a nonprofit under $250k almost never wins federal grants directly. It steers you instead toward pass-through funding through your county or state agency and toward your local community foundation, which funds small organizations most often — not straight to Grants.gov as a first stop.

What documents do we need before we start applying?

Most applications ask for the same packet: mission statement, program description with numbers served, one-year and project budgets, your most recent financial statement or Form 990/990-N, board list, IRS determination letter, one or two outcomes with evidence, and a letter of support. The tool tells you which of these it looks like your organization is missing, based on what you describe. It doesn't fill these out for you or guarantee any funder will accept them.

Is it really free? Is what I paste stored?

The tool is described as free, with no account needed, and the material states nothing you type is stored. There are also paid plans listed — Application core at $29/month and Networks & funders at $99/month — for more than the basic funder-matching guidance. Beyond that, the material doesn't spell out exactly how the free and paid tiers differ.

We're a church without our own 501(c)(3) — can we apply?

Churches are automatically tax-exempt, but many funders still ask for an IRS determination letter or a separate 501(c)(3) set up for the specific program, so check that wall first. Faith-based organizations remain eligible for most government grants that fund secular services. If you don't have your own determination yet, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor can receive and manage the grant for you, usually for a 5–15% fee — the fastest path for a pending or informal group. Confirm your church's exact standing with the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search before applying.
