What Is Florida's Hearing Aid Return and Trial Law?
Use the free tool — Hearing & Vision Help Finder
Start Here: When to See a Doctor Today
Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs a doctor or the ER today.
This tool only explains cost and coverage. It is not medical advice.
Florida's 30-Day Trial Law
Florida law requires a trial period and refund terms when you buy hearing aids.
- Fla. Stat. 484.0512 sets this rule.
- Ask the seller to explain the trial period and the refund terms in writing, before you pay.
Read the full statute at flsenate.gov. This is not legal advice — confirm the exact terms with the seller or a legal professional.
What to Ask Before You Buy
This tool never says a price is fair or too high. It only tells you what to ask.
- Ask for the itemized price.
- Ask whether bundled services — fitting, follow-up visits, warranty — can be unbundled.
- Ask about the return and trial period. Florida law requires a 30-day trial period for hearing aids (Fla. Stat. 484.0512).
Buying Hearing Aids Without a Prescription
Since October 2022, adults 18 and older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss can buy FDA-regulated hearing aids over the counter, without an exam or prescription. See the FDA's page on OTC hearing aids.
- OTC hearing aids are not made for severe hearing loss.
- OTC hearing aids are not made for children.
- A hearing test is still a good idea, even though it is not required.
This tool does not diagnose you and cannot tell you whether OTC hearing aids fit your situation. Ask a hearing professional.
What Medicare Covers — and Doesn't
Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or the exams to fit them. It does cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams ordered by a doctor. See Medicare.gov.
Many Medicare Advantage plans add hearing benefits. Compare plans during open enrollment, October 15 to December 7, with free help from Florida SHINE, 1-800-963-5337.
