Florida Homestead Exemption Deadline
Use the free tool — Homestead Exemption FL
The deadline you need to know
March 1 is the deadline to apply for the homestead exemption in Florida. Exemption amounts and county rules can change yearly, so confirm the exact date with your county property appraiser.
What homestead exemption saves you
Homestead can lower your taxable value by up to $50,000. It also caps how fast your assessed value can rise. Over time that can add up to hundreds of dollars a year, and thousands over the years you own the home.
- This is a rough estimate based on what you answer, not tax advice.
- The county property appraiser determines your actual assessed value and savings.
Moved within Florida? Portability may follow you
If you moved within Florida, you may be able to port your Save Our Homes cap from your old home to your new one. This only happens if you apply — it is not automatic. The tool walks through the math using your old house's numbers.
Extra exemptions many people miss
Beyond the basic homestead exemption, Florida law (Florida Constitution Art. VII §§4 and 6; Florida Statutes chapters 193 and 196) provides extra exemptions for:
- Seniors age 65 and older (income limits may apply)
- Widows and widowers
- People with disabilities
- Veterans
- First responders
Trusts, LLC-owned homes, and non-citizen owners have special rules. Confirm specifics with the county property appraiser.
Documents and forms
You'll typically need to apply with your county property appraiser, online or in person, using:
- Form DR-501 (homestead exemption application)
- Form DR-501T (portability, if it applies to you)
- Documents proving move-in date, residency, age, and status (veteran, disability, widow/widower) as requested by your county
What to do next
This tool is not legal or tax advice and cannot verify your residency or property values — the county property appraiser makes the final decision. Apply even if you're unsure; it's free. Use the free tool below: answer a few questions about your home and yourself, and it reads your own numbers to tell you whether you likely qualify, the rough savings math, your portability calculation if it applies, which extra exemptions you may qualify for, and the document checklist for your county.
