What Are Cheaper Alternatives to a Nursing Home in Florida?

The $9,000-a-month number isn't the only option
Someone just said a nursing home costs thousands a month, and a full-time nursing home isn't always the only path. Florida has lower-cost programs for care at home, adult day care, and assisted living — depending on what your parent needs and what's already in place. This page lays out what's real, in plain words.
What Medicare actually covers — and what it doesn't
Medicare covers a nursing home stay only after a 3-day qualifying hospital stay, up to 100 days per benefit period, and only while skilled care is still needed — never for ongoing custodial or long-term care, and never for assisted living. Medicare also covers part-time home health care when your parent is homebound and skilled care is ordered. This is the fact families get wrong most often, so confirm it directly with Medicare before assuming a longer stay will be covered. See Medicare.gov — Skilled Nursing Facility Care.
Florida's lower-cost options, before a nursing home
- The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) screens for community programs, including Community Care for the Elderly, Home Care for the Elderly, and Alzheimer's Disease Initiative respite. Call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337, or see Florida Department of Elder Affairs — ADRC.
- Adult day care
- PACE programs, in the counties that have one
- Paid family caregiving, available through Florida's Medicaid waiver
- VA Aid and Attendance, a possible monthly benefit for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living — ask the VA directly to check eligibility
Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program also pays, through a waiver with a wait list, for assisted living and in-home care — not only nursing homes. See Florida AHCA — SMMC Long-Term Care.
What it costs, and who qualifies — this page won't guess
This page does not quote facility prices and does not calculate whether your parent qualifies for Medicaid. For Florida median costs by region, see the Genworth / CareScout Cost of Care Survey. For income and asset limits, and the Qualified Income Trust option if income is above the limit, see DCF — Medicaid for the aged and disabled — the limits change yearly, so confirm the current numbers there.
Before moving money, the house, or signing anything
Florida Medicaid looks back 60 months on transfers made for less than fair value and can impose a penalty period with no coverage. A spouse at home keeps a protected share of assets and income — the community spouse resource allowance and the minimum monthly maintenance needs allowance. The home is generally exempt while a spouse or dependent lives there, but Florida's estate-recovery program may claim against the estate after death (Fla. Stat. 409.9101). There are lawful planning options, but only a Florida elder-law attorney can evaluate them for your family — the cost of that consultation is small next to what's at stake. Find one through The Florida Bar — Lawyer Referral. If your parent still has capacity and there's no power of attorney or health care surrogate in place, signing those documents now can avoid a guardianship proceeding later.
What to do next
This free tool reads the details of your own situation — the care needed, income, savings, the house, whether a spouse is at home — and lays out the cost landscape, what Medicare does and doesn't cover, how Florida Medicaid long-term care works for your numbers, and the lower-cost options that may apply, in English or Spanish. Nothing is stored, and no account is needed. This is not legal, financial, or medical advice — confirm eligibility with DCF and see a Florida elder-law attorney before any financial decision. Call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337.
