What free mediation actually is
Community mediation centers exist in most US counties. A trained, neutral third person sits down with you and your neighbor and helps you work out an agreement — no judge, no lawyer required. It resolves neighbor disputes at little or no cost, and it works.

Is it really free?
Most US counties offer free or cheap neighbor mediation through community mediation centers. This is not widely advertised — many people never hear about it until someone tells them. Check the NAFCM directory to confirm cost and availability where you live, since it varies by county.
When to try it
Mediation is a middle rung, not the first move and not the last resort:
- First: a direct, polite conversation or note. Courts and HOAs consistently ask "did you try talking first?" — a documented, friendly note is step one everywhere.
- Then: a firmer follow-up if the problem continues.
- Then: free community mediation, if direct contact hasn't worked.
- Also available: most cities take quality-of-life complaints — noise, debris — through 311, once direct contact has failed.
What mediation is not
It's not a place to bring threats or legal conclusions as fact. It's a conversation, guided by a neutral person, aimed at an agreement both sides can live with. If your situation involves threats, violence, or fear for your safety, skip mediation and letters altogether — document what happened and call the police non-emergency line.
