Does My Child's School Already Give Free Lunch to Everyone (CEP)?
Use the free tool — School Meals & Fee Waiver Check FL
What Is CEP?
The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) lets high-poverty schools serve free breakfast and lunch to every student — with no application at all. Many Florida schools participate. If your school is CEP, your child already eats free, whether or not you ever fill out a form (USDA — Community Eligibility Provision).
How to Find Out If Your School Is CEP
- Ask the school office or cafeteria staff directly: "Is this school CEP?"
- Check with your district's food or nutrition services department.
- Florida's state nutrition office can also point you to how CEP works statewide (FDACS — School nutrition programs).
This guide can't tell you which specific Florida school is CEP this year — that changes, and only the school or district can confirm it for certain.
If Your School Isn't CEP, the Application Still Matters
If your school isn't CEP, your child's meal price depends on your household's application. The federal income limits are 130% of the poverty line for free meals and 185% for reduced-price meals, by household size, updated every July (USDA FNS — Income eligibility guidelines).
- Households already getting SNAP, TANF or FDPIR are categorically eligible and are often directly certified — sometimes without filling out anything.
- Foster, homeless, migrant and Head Start children are eligible.
- You can apply any time during the school year, and reapply if your income changes.
- The application asks for household size, income by source, and the last four digits of one adult's Social Security number — or a box if there isn't one. It does not ask about immigration status, and applying doesn't affect anyone's immigration status.
What Approval Can Unlock — Especially for Teens
- College Board reduces the AP exam fee for students with financial need, based on the same income guidelines; some Florida districts cover the rest — ask the school (College Board — AP fee reductions).
- Eligible 11th and 12th graders can get free SAT registration, free score reports, and college application fee waivers (College Board — SAT fee waivers).
- The ACT has a parallel fee waiver for eligible students (ACT — Fee waivers).
- Many Florida districts also reduce or waive sports, band, testing and other activity fees for students approved for free or reduced-price meals — this differs by district, so ask the school directly.
Your Privacy Is Protected
Eligibility is confidential. Your child is not identified in the lunch line, and the information on the application is used only for the programs you consent to.
What to Do Next
The free tool asks about your household size, income, school, and any benefits you already receive — using only what you type, nothing saved. In a few seconds, it tells you whether your school likely already serves free meals to everyone, or, based on the current USDA table, whether a household your size and income appears to fall in the free, reduced, or above range. It also lists what approval could unlock for your child, including AP, SAT, and ACT fee waivers for high-schoolers. This is not legal or financial advice, and it can be wrong — the school district always makes the final call. Confirm CEP status and any fee waiver policy with your school.
