How to Make a Free Shift Swap Board Without an App

What a shift swap board is

A shift swap board is just a place where a crew posts "I need this shift covered" and someone picks it up. You don't need a paid app. Say the shift, the crew, and the rules you know, and you can get the swap request written out in a few seconds, along with the overtime and scheduling rules that could get it rejected. No account. Nothing stored.

Overtime rules that can block a swap

Under the FLSA, hours over 40 in a single workweek are paid at 1.5×, no matter whose shift it started as. A swap that moves a shift across the week line can create overtime for one person and remove it for the other — the math depends on the actual hours involved. (FLSA overtime, 29 U.S.C. § 207.)

If you or the other worker is under 18

Florida limits hours and late shifts for minors. A swap can break those rules even if both people agree to it. If either person in the swap is under 18, check Fla. Stat. 450.081 before posting a late-night swap.

If you're in a union

If a collective bargaining agreement covers your shift, the contract's scheduling and seniority articles govern — not any general swap rule. Have your steward confirm before you count on the swap.

Running the board without an app

A shared spreadsheet or a pinned message in your group chat works as a board. Post the shift, the hours, the role, and what's offered in return, and let people claim it. Always tell the manager — never swap off the books or work off the clock.

What to do next

Use the free tool to type in your own shift — day, hours, role, what you can offer — and any rules you already know. It reads your own numbers and writes the swap request, checks it against the FLSA overtime rule and the other sources above, and flags anything that needs fixing first. This is not legal advice. Confirm with your manager, your steward, or the U.S. DOL Wage and Hour Division before you count on any swap.
