Can our church apply for grants without its own 501(c)(3)?

Use the free tool — Grant Finder for Nonprofits

Short answer

Yes, often. Churches are automatically tax-exempt under the IRS. But many funders still ask for proof — an IRS determination letter, or a separate 501(c)(3) set up just for the program. If your church doesn't have one, a fiscal sponsor can usually stand in. This is general guidance, not legal or tax advice — confirm your church's exact situation with a professional and with each funder before you apply.

Automatic exemption, but funders want proof

Being a church does not automatically satisfy a funder's paperwork requirements. Check what each funder asks for before you write anything. Confirm your church's exact status with the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.

Faith-based organizations remain eligible for most government grants that fund secular services — a food pantry, a youth program, a clinic. The service funded has to be secular; the organization itself can still be a church.

If your church asks the public for donations, Florida generally requires registration first, under Fla. Stat. ch. 496 — check the Florida Solicitation of Contributions Act rules with FDACS.

No determination letter yet? A fiscal sponsor is the fastest path

A 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor can receive and manage a grant on your church's behalf, usually for a fee of 5–15%. This is the fastest route for a pending or informal group — you don't have to wait for your own IRS letter before you start applying.

Eligibility walls to check first

The document packet most applications ask for

For general nonprofit training and resources in Florida, see the Florida Nonprofit Alliance. This guide can be wrong and never invents a funder — verify every funder, deadline and eligibility rule on the funder's own site or in Candid before you apply.

What to do next

The free tool reads what you write about your church — mission, budget, county, what the money is for — and tells you which eligibility walls apply to you, what's missing from your packet, and where to search next. No account. Nothing stored.
