How Much Income Qualifies for Florida KidCare?

How is eligibility decided?
Florida's children's Medicaid and Florida KidCare look at family size, income, and the age of each child. This guide cannot quote you an exact income limit — the limits change every year, and depend on your exact family size and the child's age. Only the application decides.
In general terms: Florida's children's Medicaid covers lower-income families at no cost. Florida KidCare covers children in families with higher income — well above the Medicaid limit — for a low monthly premium. For a family of four, your income might land in the Medicaid range, the KidCare range, or above both. The application is what tells you which.
One application checks every program
You don't have to guess which program fits your child. One Florida KidCare application screens your child for four programs at once: Medicaid for children, MediKids (ages 1–4), Florida Healthy Kids (ages 5–18), and the Children's Medical Services Health Plan for children with special health-care needs. Apply online or by phone at floridakidcare.org or 1-888-540-5437.
Florida Medicaid can also be applied for directly through the Department of Children and Families. See DCF ACCESS Florida.
What immigration status changes — and what it doesn't
- A child who is a U.S. citizen or lawfully present can get Medicaid or KidCare no matter what the parents' immigration status is.
- The application asks about the child's status, not the parents'. Parents do not have to give their own immigration status or Social Security number.
- Under the current federal public-charge rule, a child's Medicaid or CHIP coverage is not counted against a parent's own immigration case. See USCIS — Public Charge Resources.
- A child without immigration status generally cannot get full Medicaid or subsidized KidCare in Florida. That child can still get emergency Medicaid, care at a community health center on a sliding scale (see HRSA Find a Health Center), and school-based health services.
An immigration attorney or accredited representative can confirm exactly how this applies to your family.
If your situation is different
- Pregnant? Pregnancy Medicaid has its own, higher income range and is applied for through DCF. Care during pregnancy matters regardless of status — Emergency Medicaid covers labor and delivery.
- Serious or chronic condition? Mention it on the KidCare application. The Children's Medical Services Health Plan is part of that same application.
- Just lost coverage — a job ended or Medicaid ended? There is no waiting period to apply for KidCare. Your child can be enrolled while parents are uninsured. A Marketplace special enrollment window may also be open for parents at HealthCare.gov.
If income looks too high for subsidized coverage
If your income looks high for free or low-cost coverage, other doors are still open: full-pay Florida KidCare, coverage for the whole family through HealthCare.gov (often with help paying), and community health centers that see children on a sliding scale regardless of income or status (HRSA Find a Health Center).
What to have ready
- Each child's birth certificate or immigration document
- Social Security number for each child, if they have one
- Proof of income for the adults — pay stubs, a letter from an employer, or a simple written statement for cash or self-employment income
- Proof of your Florida address
- Any current insurance card
What to do next
This is general information, not legal, medical or tax advice, and it does not decide eligibility. The free tool that goes with this guide reads your own family size, income and children's ages and shows you, in plain language, whether Medicaid or KidCare looks likely. Only the real application at floridakidcare.org or 1-888-540-5437, or through DCF ACCESS, can actually decide. Confirm anything about immigration status with an accredited representative or attorney. You can also call 211 or check floridalawhelp.org for local help.

Use the free toolKid's Health Coverage FL explains children's coverage programs in plain language; it can be wrong, and it is not legal or benefits advice. It never quotes income limits because they change every year — the application decides.
