Does My Immigration Status Affect My Child's Medicaid?
Use the free tool — Kid's Health Coverage FL
Does your child's immigration status matter?
A child who is a U.S. citizen or lawfully present can get Medicaid or Florida KidCare no matter what the parents' immigration status is. The application asks about the child's status, not the parents'. Parents are not required to give their own immigration status or Social Security number.
What if a parent is undocumented or unsure?
Under the current federal public-charge rule, a child's Medicaid or CHIP coverage is not counted against a parent's immigration case (USCIS — Public Charge Resources). That is the rule as it stands now. An immigration attorney or accredited representative can confirm exactly how it applies to your family.
One application checks every program
Florida KidCare is one application that screens a child for Medicaid for children, MediKids (ages 1–4), Florida Healthy Kids (ages 5–18), and the Children's Medical Services Health Plan for children with special health-care needs. Apply online or by phone at 1-888-540-5437 (floridakidcare.org). Florida Medicaid can also be applied for directly through the Department of Children and Families (DCF ACCESS Florida).
If your child doesn't have an immigration status
A child without immigration status is generally not eligible for full Medicaid or subsidized Florida KidCare. But there are still doors:
- Emergency Medicaid covers emergency care, including labor and delivery.
- Community health centers see children regardless of immigration status or ability to pay, on a sliding scale (HRSA Find a Health Center).
- School-based health services are available through your child's school.
This is general information, not legal advice. An immigration attorney or accredited representative can look at your child's specific situation.
What to have ready
Whichever application you use, have these ready:
- The children's birth certificates or immigration documents
- Social Security numbers for the children, if they have them
- Proof of income for the adults — pay stubs, a letter from an employer, or a simple written statement for cash or self-employment income
- Proof of your Florida address
- Any current insurance card
What to do next
This page can't decide eligibility — only the application does that. The free tool asks for your family size, income and children's ages, and tells you in plain language what's likely: free Medicaid, low-cost KidCare, or the other doors — plus what immigration status does and doesn't change for your situation. Nothing you enter is stored. Confirm anything about immigration status with an accredited representative or attorney, and apply at floridakidcare.org or 1-888-540-5437.
