Why did my pension seem to disappear?

Companies close, merge, or end their pension plans. When that happens, the pension itself does not just vanish. A federal agency often takes over the payments, and an old, undelivered pension check can also end up listed as unclaimed property in the state where you lived. This page lists only the official, free places to check — in order.

Step 1: Search PBGC for a taken-over pension

If your former employer's pension plan ended or was taken over, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) may now be the one paying it. Search using your name and your former employer's name.

Step 2: Also check Florida Treasury Hunt and MissingMoney.com

An old pension check that could not be delivered sometimes ends up on a state's unclaimed-property list instead. Search Florida first, then search every other state you have lived in.

• FLTreasuryHunt.gov — Florida CFO: the official state search — Florida holds unclaimed money for anyone who lived or did business here.
• MissingMoney.com (NAUPA): the multi-state search run by the state programs themselves, for every other state you have lived in.

If your old plan was a 401(k), not a traditional pension

PBGC covers traditional pension plans, not 401(k)-style plans. If your old employer offered a 401(k) instead and the company is gone, the U.S. Department of Labor keeps a search for abandoned plans. Confirm with the agency which kind of plan you had before you search, since this page cannot tell you that.
