Discounts Florida law requires
Florida law requires your insurer to give you two discounts if you ask and provide proof. They are not automatic.
- Defensive-driving course. Complete an approved motor vehicle accident prevention course and your insurer must lower your premium. The discount must be offered to drivers 55 and older, and it lasts three years. (Fla. Stat. 627.0652)
- Anti-theft devices and airbags. Approved anti-theft devices, airbags, and other passive restraints must also earn you a premium discount. (Fla. Stat. 627.0653)
Ask your agent for both, and send the certificate or proof of the device if you have it.
Discounts most companies don't bring up
These are not required by law. Most insurers offer some of them, but you usually have to ask.
- Multi-car, if more than one vehicle is on the policy
- Bundling with renters or homeowners insurance
- Paying in full, going paperless, or autopay
- Low mileage, usually under roughly 7,500 miles a year
- Good student, generally a B average and under 25
- Telematics or usage-based programs — your driving is tracked in exchange for the discount
- Driver training for teens
- Loyalty or renewal discounts
- Membership, employer, or union group discounts
- Military discounts
No one can promise you a percentage off. Ask which of these you already get, and which you qualify for.
Coverage worth a second look
Florida requires two coverages: $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability. (Fla. Stat. 627.733 · FLHSMV)
- Bodily injury liability is not required for most drivers, but it is strongly recommended. Do not drop it to save money.
- Collision and comprehensive on an older, paid-off car worth less than about ten times your deductible may not be worth keeping. If the car is financed, the lender requires both.
- Raising your deductible lowers your premium, but raises what you pay out of pocket after a crash.
- Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance are optional add-ons, not required.
Confirm any change with your agent before you make it.
If you have a teen driver
Adding a teen raises the premium substantially. The usual ways to offset that are the good-student discount, driver-training courses, and telematics programs. Never leave a driver who lives in your household off the policy.
Tickets and old claims
Most tickets and claims fall off your rating after three to five years. Ask your agent exactly when the surcharge on your policy ends.
What to say on the call
- "Am I getting the defensive-driving course discount? I'm 55 or older, or I can take the course."
- "Am I getting the discount for my car's anti-theft device and airbags?"
- "Do I qualify for low-mileage, pay-in-full, good-student, or bundling discounts?"
- "What would collision and comprehensive cost to drop on my paid-off car, and what would I lose?"
- "When does the surcharge from my last ticket or claim end?"
- "Can you match a quote if I bring you one with identical coverages from another company?"
Also compare two quotes with identical coverages at renewal. See the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation's guide to shopping for auto insurance: floir.com/consumers. For questions or complaints, call the Florida Department of Financial Services helpline at 1-877-693-5236. (myfloridacfo.com)
What to do next
This page is general information, not insurance advice, and it can be wrong. The free tool works differently: it reads the premium, coverages, cars, and drivers you type in, and shows you which of these discounts and coverage questions apply to your own policy — nothing is saved. Then it gives you the script to read to your agent. Confirm everything with your agent or the Florida helpline before you change your policy.
