What is the minimum car insurance required by law in Florida?

What Florida law actually requires

Florida requires two coverages on your car insurance policy: $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability (Fla. Stat. 627.733). Bodily injury liability — coverage that pays for injuries you cause to someone else — is not required for most drivers.

See Florida's own explanation from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Why bodily injury coverage matters even though it's optional

Because Florida does not require bodily injury liability, some drivers drop it to save money. This guide does not recommend that. If you cause an accident that injures someone, you could be personally responsible for costs beyond your PIP coverage. Don't drop bodily injury liability without talking to your agent first.

Discounts Florida law says your insurer must give you

Two discounts are required by Florida law — but insurers won't apply them unless you ask:

Ask your agent about both, and be ready to send your completion certificate or proof of the device.

Coverage that's optional — and worth a second look

Beyond the required minimums, most policies also include collision and comprehensive coverage, plus optional add-ons.

Compare coverage details at the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

What this guide doesn't know

This page doesn't know your premium, your car's value, or which discounts you already have. It can't tell you whether you're over-insured or under-insured — only your policy and your agent can. If you have questions, call Florida's insurance consumer helpline at 1-877-693-5236.

What to do next

The free tool reads the numbers straight from your own policy — your premium, coverages, cars and drivers — and shows you which required discounts you may be missing, which common discounts to ask about, and which coverages are worth a second look. Nothing you type is stored. This is not insurance advice; confirm any change with a licensed agent before you make it.
