Does Florida require a discount for defensive driving after 55?

Yes — Florida law requires this discount

Florida Statute 627.0652 requires insurers to give a discount to drivers who complete an approved motor vehicle accident prevention (defensive driving) course. The course must be offered to drivers age 55 and older, and the discount lasts three years before you need to take the course again.

This is not optional for the insurance company. It is required by Florida law. But the insurer does not apply it automatically — you have to ask and give them your completion certificate.

What you need to do

The material here does not say what percentage the discount must be. Ask your agent what the exact discount amount is on your policy.

Another discount required by Florida law

Florida Statute 627.0653 requires a separate discount for approved anti-theft devices and for airbags or other passive restraints. If your car has either, ask for this discount too — it is also not automatic.

Other discounts most companies offer but don't volunteer

These are not required by law, but many insurers offer them if you ask:

No source here promises a specific percentage for any of these. Ask your agent what applies to you.

Coverage to double-check while you're on the phone

Florida requires only $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability (Fla. Stat. 627.733). Bodily injury liability is not required for most drivers but is strongly recommended — don't drop it just to save money. Collision and comprehensive on an older, paid-off car may not be worth the premium if the car's value is less than about ten times the deductible — but if the car is financed, the lender requires both coverages. Ask your agent before changing anything.

For more on how to compare coverages, see the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation consumer page.

What to do next

Type your premium, your coverages, your cars and your drivers into the free tool. It reads your own numbers — not a generic example — and tells you which required and common discounts you're likely missing, plus a short script to read to your agent. Nothing you type is stored.
