What is the Gold Seal Vocational / CAPE award?

Gold Seal Vocational and CAPE are two of the Bright Futures award levels. They are built for students who take career and technical education (career-education) courses along with the standard coursework, rather than the academic-track path that Academic Scholars and Medallion Scholars follow.

Like every Bright Futures award, Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE requires Florida residency, a standard diploma, graduation from a Florida high school (for most students), and the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) filed by the deadline.

Courses and GPA

Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE has its own set of career-education course and GPA requirements — separate from the core-course GPA calculation used for Academic Scholars and Medallion Scholars. The exact courses and GPA level are listed by category on the official OSFA chart.

Test score

Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE has a different test option than the SAT/ACT/CLT path required for Academic Scholars and Medallion Scholars. Check the OSFA chart for the current test option and score for this award — the numbers are set each year and this page will not state them as fixed figures.

The deadline for submitting test scores is typically June 30 after graduation — check the current date. Fee waivers exist for eligible students; see College Board — SAT fee waivers.

Service or work hours

Florida now allows volunteer service hours, paid work hours, or a combination of both to count toward the hours requirement. Hours must be documented and approved through the district's process, and they can begin as early as 9th grade — some districts also count the summer before. The number of hours required differs by award, so check the source below for Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE specifically.

Applying: the FFAA

Every Bright Futures award, including Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE, requires the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) — the one form used for Bright Futures and state grants. It is typically due by the student's senior-year deadline, often August 31 after graduation — check the current date. The student must also be evaluated by the high school; home-education and private-school students have their own evaluation routes.
