What Counts Toward the Hours Requirement

Florida now lets volunteer service hours, paid work hours, or a combination of both count toward the Bright Futures hours requirement. This applies across the awards, but the total number of hours needed differs by award. Check the official rules before assuming your student's hours qualify.

How Many Hours Does My Student Need?

The published requirement for hours is on the OSFA Bright Futures chart — check the current year. Academic Scholars, Medallion Scholars and Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE each have their own hours target, and Academic Scholars generally needs more service hours than Medallion Scholars. Don't guess the number — confirm it on the chart for your student's graduating class.

When Can Hours Start?

Hours can begin as early as 9th grade. Some districts also count the summer before 9th grade. Ask the school counselor which start date your district uses.

How Hours Must Be Documented

• Hours must be documented and approved through the district's own process.
• This applies whether the hours are volunteer service, paid work, or a mix of both.
• Keep records as you go — don't wait until senior year to try to reconstruct hours.

If Hours Are Short

If your student is behind on hours, the plan usually means combining volunteer and paid work going forward, and confirming with the counselor exactly how many hours remain and by when they're due. Gold Seal Vocational/CAPE and Medallion Scholars are sometimes more realistic than Academic Scholars if hours — or other requirements — are short. Whichever award is the goal, the FFAA application still needs to be filed by the deadline.
