what does paying an extra 50 dollars a month on my car loan do
Use the free tool — Car Loan Check
Start with three numbers
Your balance, your rate, and the months left on the loan. Those three numbers decide how much interest you still owe and what an extra payment can do. Type them into the tool and it runs the math for you — nothing is saved.
What an extra $50 a month actually does
Every extra dollar you send goes toward your balance, not toward interest. A smaller balance means less interest builds up each month, so the loan can pay off sooner. The exact number of months you save and the exact dollars you keep depend on your own balance, rate, and months left — the tool shows the math on your numbers, assuming a fixed rate and no fees.
This is arithmetic, not a guarantee. If your lender has already given you a payoff quote, trust that number over any estimate.
When a credit union refinance beats an extra $50
If your rate is above roughly 12% and your credit is fair or better — or you're current and more than 12 months into the loan — a refinance call is usually worth making. The tool can show a scenario, for example: if a credit union offered 9%, your payment would be a certain amount and you'd save a certain amount over the loan. That is an illustration, not an offer. The actual rate a lender gives you depends on your credit, the car's age and mileage, and the lender itself.
- Compare at least two real offers before you decide.
- See CFPB — Auto loans for how refinancing works and what to compare.
If the loan is nearly paid off, or your rate is already low, an extra $50 a month may do more for you than a refinance would.
If you're behind — what Florida law says
Call your lender before the due date. Ask in writing for a deferment or extension. In Florida, a lender may repossess your car after default without going to court, but it may not breach the peace while doing it (Fla. Stat. 679.609).
Before selling a repossessed car, the lender must send you notice, and you may still owe the difference between what the car sold for and what you owed, plus costs — a deficiency (Fla. Stat. 679.611 · 679.614).
If you have GAP insurance, an extended warranty, or other add-ons, ask the lender in writing — these can often be cancelled for a prorated refund.
What to do next
Type your balance, rate, payment, and months left into the free tool. It reads your own numbers — not examples — and shows the interest left on the loan, what an extra $50 a month does to it, whether a credit union call is likely worth it, and the Florida rules if you're behind. Nothing is stored.
This page and the tool are not financial or legal advice. Confirm any number with your lender, and consider a free review from a nonprofit credit counselor at NFCC — find a counselor. For a deficiency claim, Florida legal aid can help.
