Where to Get Cheap Dental Care at a Florida Dental School

If this is an emergency, stop here
Facial or neck swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing is an emergency. Go to the emergency room or call 911 first. An ER treats the emergency, not the tooth itself — a dental follow-up still comes after.
Florida's dental schools treat the public
Florida has supervised student dental clinics at the University of Florida, Nova Southeastern University, and LECOM. Students treat patients under faculty supervision, and these clinics generally charge a fraction of private fees. Care can take longer because it's a teaching setting, and not every procedure is offered at every school.
Call ahead to ask what the clinic treats, current wait times, and what proof of income or ID you need to bring.
Other lower-cost routes worth knowing about
Dental schools aren't the only option. Depending on the situation, other Florida routes exist:
- Community health centers (FQHCs): many have dental clinics that charge by income on a sliding scale. Find one by ZIP with the HRSA locator.
- Children on Florida Medicaid: every child has full dental coverage through a Medicaid dental plan. Adults on Medicaid have a more limited benefit — check what's currently covered on the Florida AHCA Medicaid dental page.
- Seniors, people with disabilities, or the medically fragile who can't afford care: Donated Dental Services offers free comprehensive dental care. See Dental Lifeline Network — Florida.
- Original Medicare does not cover most dental care. See Medicare.gov — Dental services. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental — compare during open enrollment, and ask SHINE for help.
- Free clinic days such as Florida Mission of Mercy happen periodically. See the Florida Dental Association Foundation.
- Dental discount plans are not insurance. You pay a fee to get a negotiated, lower rate — ask exactly what the negotiated rate is before you sign up.
Three questions before treatment starts
- What is the full fee for this, in writing, and what are the alternatives?
- Can this be done in stages — what's urgent and what can wait?
- Is a payment plan or a sliding-scale fee available, and is a student or resident clinic an option?
What's known and what isn't
This page does not state prices, because none were given in the material it's built from. "Reduced fees," "sliding scale," and "free" mean different things at different clinics — the actual fee schedule for a given clinic isn't known here and has to be asked for directly. Florida's adult Medicaid dental benefit is limited; the exact current coverage should be confirmed on the AHCA page above, not assumed.
What to do next
The free tool behind this guide reads what you type — what's wrong, your county, your coverage — and lines up the Florida options that fit, in plain language, in English or Spanish. Nothing you type is stored, and there's no account.
This is not dental advice and it can be wrong. It never diagnoses. Facial swelling, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing is an emergency — go to the ER or call 911. Confirm fees with the clinic and coverage with your plan before treatment starts.
