Does Medicare Cover Dental Work?

If you have pain, swelling, or fever
Facial or neck swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing is an emergency. Go to the emergency room or call 911. This is true no matter what your insurance says.
What Original Medicare covers
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover most dental care, according to Medicare.gov — Dental services. Check that page for what it does and does not pay for in your situation.
Medicare Advantage and dental
Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits. Plans differ, so compare options during open enrollment, and ask SHINE (Florida's free Medicare counseling program) for help understanding what a specific plan covers.
If you need dental care now, lower-cost options in Florida
- Dental schools: University of Florida, Nova Southeastern, and LECOM run supervised student clinics that treat the public at reduced fees. See UF College of Dentistry patient care.
- Community health centers: many federally qualified health centers have dental clinics that charge by income on a sliding scale. Find one by ZIP code with the HRSA health center locator.
- Donated Dental Services: free comprehensive dental care for seniors, people with disabilities, and the medically fragile who can't afford it. See Dental Lifeline Network — Florida — this is a common route for dentures.
- Free clinic days: events like Florida Mission of Mercy happen through the Florida Dental Association Foundation.
- Dental discount plans: these are not insurance. You pay a fee for a negotiated rate with participating dentists. Ask exactly what the negotiated rate is before you sign up.
Three questions to ask before treatment starts
- What is the full fee for this, in writing, and what are the alternatives?
- Can this be done in stages, and what is urgent versus what can wait?
- Is a payment plan or a sliding-scale fee available, and is a student or resident clinic an option?
What to do next
The free tool reads what you type — your situation, your county, and your coverage — and lines it up against Florida's actual programs. It doesn't diagnose, and it doesn't state prices. Nothing you type is stored. This page is not dental, medical, or insurance advice — confirm coverage with your plan and fees with the provider before treatment.
