In pain or swelling? Start here
If you have swelling in your face or neck, a fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing, that is an emergency. Go to the emergency room or call 911 first. The ER treats the emergency, not the tooth. This guide does not diagnose anything. What you describe only helps point toward how urgent it is and the right kind of clinic in Florida.
Lower-cost dental care for uninsured adults
Florida has several routes to lower-cost dental care, even without insurance.
- Community health centers with dental clinics charge by income, on a sliding scale. Find one by ZIP code: HRSA — Find a health center.
- Florida's dental schools run supervised student clinics that generally charge a fraction of private fees, including the University of Florida, Nova Southeastern University, and LECOM: UF College of Dentistry patient care.
- College dental-hygiene programs can also offer reduced-fee cleanings and other basic care.
- Free clinic days happen from time to time, such as the Florida Mission of Mercy, organized through the Florida Dental Association Foundation.
- Dental discount plans are not insurance. You pay a fee for a negotiated, lower rate at participating dentists. Ask exactly what is included and what it costs before you join.
Seniors and people with disabilities
Original Medicare (Part A/B) does not cover most dental care: Medicare.gov — Dental services.
- Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits. Compare plans during open enrollment, and ask SHINE for free help.
- Donated Dental Services, run by Dental Lifeline Network, provides free comprehensive dental care to seniors, people with permanent disabilities, and people who are medically fragile and cannot afford care: Dental Lifeline Network — Florida.
- For dentures, Donated Dental Services and dental schools are usually the lower-cost routes.
Children in the family
Every child on Florida Medicaid has full dental coverage through a Medicaid dental plan: Florida AHCA — Medicaid dental. Adults on Medicaid have a more limited adult dental benefit — check the current adult benefit directly on the AHCA page. Ask the county health department about school-based sealant programs, which exist in many Florida counties.
Three questions before treatment starts
- What is the full fee for this, in writing, and what are the alternatives?
- Can this be done in stages? What is urgent, and what can wait?
- Is a payment plan or a sliding-scale fee available, and is a student or resident clinic an option?
