Does Florida Medicaid help pay Medicare costs?

Yes, for some people. Florida Medicaid can help pay Medicare costs for seniors through specific programs — sometimes called Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help — and through Medicaid for people who qualify because of Social Security or SSI (SSI-related Medicaid). These are not the same as regular Medicaid for adults. This page does not tell you whether you personally qualify.

These programs have their own rules

Medicaid for people on Medicare — including Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help, and long-term care Medicaid — uses different income and asset rules than the Medicaid categories most working-age adults use. We don't have the specific dollar limits here, and we won't guess at them. Only Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF) or a trained counselor can tell you the current numbers and whether you qualify.

Already on Medicaid and got a renewal letter?

Florida Medicaid renewals happen at least every 12 months. If Medicaid was terminated for not returning paperwork, federal rules give up to 90 days to send it in — DCF must process it without a new application (see 42 C.F.R. § 435.916). A Fair Hearing can also be requested, and benefits can continue during the appeal if it's requested before the termination date. If Medicaid help with Medicare truly ends and other coverage is needed, free civil legal aid by county is listed at FloridaLawHelp.org.

What to do next

This free tool reads a renewal letter, notice, or the numbers a reader types in, and explains — in plain words, in English or Spanish — the deadline, the documents DCF is asking for, and the fastest way to send them. It does not decide eligibility for Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help; for that, call SHINE at 1-800-963-5337 or DCF at 1-850-300-4323.

This tool is not a caseworker or a lawyer and can be wrong. Only DCF decides eligibility. Confirm deadlines on the actual letter and with DCF or free legal aid. Nothing pasted here is stored.
