Can I get food stamps or Medicaid with a felony record in Florida?
In most cases, yes. Having a felony conviction does not automatically stop you from applying for SNAP (food assistance) or Medicaid in Florida. DCF decides each case, and some convictions — particularly drug-trafficking convictions — can carry restrictions. This page explains what is generally true and what you need to confirm yourself.
Where you apply
Apply through Florida DCF's ACCESS Florida system. This is the same office that decides SNAP and Medicaid applications for everyone in Florida, not a special reentry program.
What could limit your eligibility
- Some drug-trafficking convictions carry specific restrictions on SNAP eligibility.
- DCF reviews your application and makes the decision — this page cannot tell you in advance what DCF will decide for your specific conviction.
- We do not have amounts, income limits or exact time limits to give you here. Ask DCF ACCESS directly for the current rules that apply to your situation.
When to apply
Apply the first week you are home. Processing takes time, and starting early means less of a gap before help arrives.
What we don't know
This page cannot tell you whether your specific conviction affects your eligibility, how much benefit you might get, or how long a decision will take. Those are DCF's decisions, made case by case. This is not legal, medical or tax advice. Confirm your situation directly with DCF ACCESS before you count on any benefit.
What to do next
The free Reentry Roadmap FL tool reads your own details — your release date, your conviction, what you need first — and gives you a plain-language order of what to do this week, this month, and after that, using only official Florida sources. It does not store anything you enter, and it does not replace DCF, your probation officer, or a lawyer.
