Report exactly as your officer told you, and keep every appointment. A missed report is the fastest way back inside. Tell your officer about every step in this guide — your ID, your address, any job, any travel.

The ID Chain: What to Get, in This Order

Florida asks for one document to get the next. Follow this order.

  1. Release ID or inmate ID from the Florida Department of Corrections or your county jail. Keep it — you'll need it for the next step.
  2. Florida ID card or driver license from FLHSMV. Bring your release ID and anything else you have; a records search can help prove who you are.
  3. Birth certificate from the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics if you were born in Florida, or from the vital records office of the state where you were born.
  4. Social Security card — a replacement is free from SSA.

Who Can Help With the Paperwork and Fees

Reentry programs and many county clerks of court help with these documents and the fees that come with them. The Florida Department of Corrections reentry portal also explains IDs and the release process. Ask early — some steps take time.

Why This ID Chain Matters Next

Once you have ID, you can apply for SNAP and Medicaid through DCF ACCESS, look for work through CareerSource Florida, and start on other steps like a driver license or voting rights. If money owed to the court is part of your situation, the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition helps with fines and fees.

What's Not Certain

Every county jail and clerk's office works a little differently, and processing times vary. This page cannot tell you how long your specific documents will take, or whether a particular office will accept what you bring. Ask the office directly, and bring everything you have. This is general information, not legal advice.

What to Do Next

Confirm requirements with FLHSMV, the Florida Department of Health, SSA, or your reentry program before you go — this guide can be wrong, and rules change.
