The 3-day rule

If a solar salesperson signed you up inside your home, federal and Florida law give you a short window to change your mind — no matter how good the pitch sounded.

• The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you 3 business days to cancel a sale of $25 or more made at your home.
• Florida's home-solicitation rule, Fla. Stat. 501.025, also gives 3 days.

This right applies regardless of what the contract says.

How to cancel

Cancellation has to be in writing. The seller is required to give you a cancellation form at the time you sign — use it, or send your own written notice before the 3-day window closes. Keep a copy of what you sent and proof you sent it.

What if the 3 days already passed

Once the cooling-off period ends, whether you can still get out depends on the contract itself — its cancellation clause, any early-termination or restocking fees, and the type of deal it is: cash purchase, loan, lease, power-purchase agreement, or PACE financing. Things to check before you decide

• Confirm the installer holds a Florida license through DBPR's license search before you commit to anything.
• If the pitch was "your bill goes to zero" or "the utility pays you," know that Florida's net-metering rule credits extra power at the retail rate month to month but pays out any year-end surplus at a much lower wholesale rate — a bill doesn't go to zero.
• If it's a lease or a PPA, remember the federal tax credit belongs to whoever owns the system — the company, not you.
• If it's PACE financing, know it becomes a lien on your property tax bill under Fla. Stat. 163.08, and that lien can complicate a future sale or refinance.
