Why the license matters
Florida requires solar contractors to hold a certified solar contractor, electrical, or appropriate contractor license from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). An unlicensed installer is a warning sign. Before you sign anything, check.
How to check the license
Use DBPR's license search to verify the contractor and the company name printed on your proposal.
Search for the exact name and license number on the contract or proposal, not just the sales rep's name.
What to look for besides "licensed"
- Confirm the license is active, not expired or under discipline.
- Match the license holder's name to the company that will actually sign the contract, not just the person who knocked on your door.
- Ask for the license number in writing before you sign anything.
If you already signed before checking
If the sale happened at your home, the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule and Florida's home-solicitation rule generally give you three business days to cancel a sale of $25 or more, in writing. The seller is required to give you a cancellation form.
After that window, whether you can cancel depends on what the contract itself says.
Compare offers, not just licenses
A valid license doesn't tell you whether the deal itself — purchase, loan, lease, PPA, or PACE — is a good fit, or whether the price, production estimate, and tax-credit claims are accurate.
