Why the license matters before you sign anything
After a storm, contractors show up fast, sometimes with a contract already on the hood of the truck. A real Florida contractor has a license number you can check. A storm chaser often does not, or gives you a number that doesn't match. Checking the license is free and takes a few minutes.
Where to check a Florida contractor's license
Florida licenses are handled by DBPR. You can look up any contractor's license, free, at myfloridalicense.com. This tool cannot verify the license for you — you have to do this lookup yourself.
- Ask for the license number before they leave, not after.
- Confirm the name on the license matches the company on the contract.
- If they can't or won't give you a license number, that's a red flag.
Other Florida rules that protect you in the contract itself
Once you've checked the license, the contract itself should follow Florida rules, including:
- No assignment of benefits (AOB) language for insurance policies issued after 2023.
- The deposit and start-date rule under §489.126 — Florida limits the deposit to 10% and requires a start within 90 days.
- A 3-day right to cancel for contracts signed from door-to-door sales.
