What is a Florida business tax receipt?
A business tax receipt — sometimes still called an "occupational license" — is a local permit that lets your business operate in a county or city. It is separate from your Sunbiz annual report and separate from any state professional license.
When does it expire?
Florida law says local business tax receipts expire on September 30 each year, and renewals are due by that date in most counties and cities. This comes from Fla. Stat. 205.053.
Who sets the exact rules?
The statute sets the expiration date, but each county and city tax collector runs its own renewal form, fee schedule and any grace period. We were not given those local specifics.
- Check directly with your county or city tax collector's office for the exact renewal form, fee and deadline that apply to your address.
- If your business operates in more than one city, ask whether each city requires its own separate receipt in addition to the county's.
Is this the same as my Sunbiz annual report?
No. The Sunbiz annual report is a state filing due May 1, separate from the local business tax receipt due September 30. Missing the Sunbiz report can lead to administrative dissolution in late September. Do not assume your entity's status either way — confirm it directly on sunbiz.org.
What about state professional licenses?
If your industry needs a state license — contractors, cosmetology, real estate, restaurants — that license renews on its own separate schedule through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Check MyFloridaLicense (DBPR) for the cycle that applies to your license type.
What we don't know
- Your specific county's or city's renewal form, fee amount and grace period
- Whether a second city receipt applies on top of the county one
- Whether your industry needs a DBPR license and when exactly that one renews
