Can I sign up right now, or do I have to wait?

Open enrollment for the marketplace usually runs from November 1 to January 15. Outside that window, you generally need a qualifying life event to enroll — and you usually have 60 days from that event to do it. Confirm your exact dates and deadline at HealthCare.gov's special enrollment page — this guide can't set or guarantee your deadline.

Life events that open a 60-day window

If more than one of these just happened to you, or you're not sure your event counts, a free certified navigator can check it with you.

Florida's coverage gap — and why it matters for enrolling

Florida has not expanded Medicaid. That means adults without dependent children generally don't qualify for Florida Medicaid no matter how low their income is, and parents only qualify at very low income. Some adults end up below 100% of the federal poverty level with no Medicaid and no marketplace subsidy — this is the coverage gap. See KFF's explanation of the coverage gap for who is affected. If your income later rises above the gap, that change itself can open a special enrollment window — worth rechecking later.

Children, KidCare, and immigration status

Florida KidCare covers children in working families above Medicaid income limits, with income-based premiums. Undocumented adults cannot enroll in the marketplace themselves, but a U.S.-citizen child can still qualify for KidCare or Medicaid, and applying for the child does not affect the parents. Lawfully present immigrants can use the marketplace and may qualify for subsidies even below the usual income floor if they aren't eligible for Medicaid. A free certified navigator can walk through this safely with you.

What about the cost — will I get help paying?

This guide can't tell you a dollar amount — that depends on where your household income falls against the federal poverty level (roughly 100%, 138%, 250%, and 400% are the thresholds that matter; see the current table when you look). For a real estimate, use HealthCare.gov's "See plans & prices" preview or the KFF Health Insurance Marketplace Calculator. If your job offers coverage, whether it's considered "affordable" affects your subsidy — a navigator can check that with you too. This is not insurance, legal, or tax advice.

What to do next

Use the free tool linked from this page. Describe your household, roughly what you'll earn this year, and whether anything just changed. It reads your own numbers — not a stranger's example — to show whether a life event likely opens enrollment today, whether the coverage gap applies to you, and where to find free help, in English or Spanish. Nothing you type is stored. Find a certified navigator near you at HealthCare.gov's local help finder, free, in every Florida county.
