What is Florida KidCare?

Florida KidCare is low-cost health coverage for children in working families. It is designed for families whose income is above Florida Medicaid limits, and it charges income-based premiums. The official place to check your child's situation is Florida KidCare.

Does my child qualify?

Florida has not expanded Medicaid. Adults without dependent children generally do not qualify for Florida Medicaid no matter how low their income is, and parents qualify for Medicaid only at very low income. Children are treated differently: many children in working families qualify for Florida KidCare even when their parents do not qualify for Medicaid or a marketplace subsidy. The only way to know for sure is to check your child's income and age against the current KidCare rules on Florida KidCare.

What about my own coverage as a parent?

Your child may qualify for KidCare even if you, the parent, do not qualify for anything. This is part of what is called the Florida coverage gap: some low-income adults fall between Florida Medicaid (which mostly excludes adults without dependent children) and marketplace subsidies (which generally start around the federal poverty level). Can I enroll right now, or do I have to wait?

Some events open a 60-day window to enroll outside the regular open enrollment period, including:

• Having a baby or adopting a child
• Losing other coverage
• Moving
• Marriage
• Losing Medicaid or CHIP — this has had extended windows at times, so confirm the current rule

If I'm undocumented, can my child still get help?

Yes. Undocumented adults cannot enroll themselves in the marketplace. But a child who is a U.S. citizen can still qualify for Florida KidCare or Medicaid, and applying for the child does not affect the parents. Lawfully present immigrants can use the marketplace and may qualify for subsidies even below the usual income floor if they are not eligible for Medicaid.
